“Slow Down”
Featuring Art of Lucas Barraza
Lucas Barraza is a Chicano contemporary artist originally from Texas, now based in New Jersey. His work prominently features charcoal and pastel drawings that evoke a painterly, dream-like quality, often exploring themes of family, romance, and stillness. Barraza’s art incorporates iconography and motifs familiar to the Mexican-American diaspora, reflecting his cultural heritage and personal experiences.
Barraza’s relocation to New Jersey in 2018 exposed him to a diverse group of people, motivating him to express his experiences and appreciation for his culture through his artwork.
In 2024, Barraza first presented his exhibition titled “Slow Down” at the Davis Gallery of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. The Bridge Art Gallery is thrilled to showcase this captivating exhibition at Nimbus Arts in Jersey City during the month of January.
On Friday, January 10th 2025, the opening reception will include brief remarks by Barraza. Reception begins at 6:00 pm.
“Slow Down” makes elements of Barraza’s heritage more welcoming to others by building compositions focused on uplifting characteristics such as humor, family, and romance. The series imagined the unique “Down Drive-In Theater” within a fictional town inspired by his neighborhood in Texas, utilizing notable motifs and iconography in a classic American pastime of going to a drive-in theater.
Barraza’s dedication to showcasing Chicano art and his unique perspective contribute significantly to the contemporary art scene, offering viewers a blend of personal heritage, fantasy, and cultural pride.
